If you’re searching for an electric vehicle (EV) in McKinney, Texas, you might be considering the 2024 Kia EV6 or the Hyundai IONIQ 5. Both SUVs have sleek, futuristic looks, provide excellent performance, offer numerous convenience features, and are ideal for commuters and college students. Continue reading as our Huffines Kia McKinney team does an EV6 vs. IONIQ 5 comparison.

Hyundai vs. Kia

Hyundai and Kia are Korean brands with the same parent company that offer similar lineups. Since both manufacturers operate independently, they also have many differences. Most Kias are sportier than Hyundais. For example, the EV6 has a more angular, aggressive look than the IONIQ 5. Kias often offer better value and handling than Hyundais. Both brands have a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain and a five-year, 60,000-mile limited basic warranty.

2024 Kia EV6 vs. Hyundai IONIQ 5: Trim Levels and Exterior

Both vehicles use the same Electric Global Modular Platform for excellent efficiency and roominess. These SUVs also have 6.1 inches of ground clearance. With the EV6, you can choose from the following eight trim levels in rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD):

  • Light RWD.
  • Light Long Range RWD.
  • Light Long Range AWD.
  • Wind RWD.
  • Wind AWD.
  • GT-Line RWD.
  • GT-Line AWD.
  • GT AWD.

The 2024 IONIQ 5 is available in the SE Standard Range, SE, SEL, or Limited trims. The IONIQ 5 is a bit taller than the EV6, but the EV6 is slightly longer.

With the EV6, you’ll get rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated side mirrors with turn signals, automatic LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and a rear spoiler. The Wind and higher trims have a power liftgate and an illuminated charging port with an onboard power generator port. With the GT-Line and GT trim levels, you’ll get a sunroof.

The base EV6 Light RWD and the IONIQ 5 SE Standard Range have 19-inch alloy wheels. Select the EV6 GT-Line AWD for 20-inch wheels or the GT for 21-inch wheels. The IONIQ 5 doesn’t offer 21-inch wheels, but 20-inch wheels are optional with the Limited AWD trim. The EV6 and IONIQ 5 share many standard features, including active grille shutters, an acoustic windshield, and rear privacy glass. Only the Limited trim on the IONIQ 5 has power-folding side mirrors like the EV6.

2024 Kia EV6 vs. Hyundai IONIQ 5: Powertrain and Performance

The EV6 and IONIQ 5 share the same platforms, batteries, and electric powertrains and offer similar capabilities. Charging takes about 18 minutes with a high-powered charger, and AWD versions of the Kia have heat pumps that extend the range in cold weather. The base EV6 Light RWD offers 167 hp, and the IONIQ 5 SE Standard Range gives 168 hp. Both produce 258 lb-ft of torque.

The IONIQ 5’s SE, SEL, and Limited trims produce 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque with AWD, the same ratings as the EV6 Light Long Range, Wind, and GT-Line AWD trims. The RWD SE, SEL, and Limited generate 225 hp, the same as the Light Long Range, Wind, and GT-Line RWD trims.

The EV6 has a sport suspension with dynamic damping, giving the IONIQ 5 a smoother ride. They both include Normal, Eco, Sport, and Snow driving modes. The EV6 GT AWD also comes with a GT mode and a drift mode for enjoying time on the track. The IONIQ 5 doesn’t approach the GT’s performance level but is comparable to the other EV6 trims.

2024 Kia EV6 vs. Hyundai IONIQ 5: Range

Both vehicles have four regenerative braking settings to conserve power and maximize range. The Kia EV6’s range is slightly higher than the IONIQ 5’s. The base EV6 Light RWD reaches 232 miles with a full charge compared to the IONIQ 5 SE Standard Range’s 220 miles. The Light Long Range RWD can go 310 miles before charging, and most RWD IONIQ 5 trims can travel 303 miles, while AWD versions reach 260 miles.

The EV6 GT AWD has the shortest range at 218 miles, but it’s the most powerful option with 576 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque. It can go from zero to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, and its top speed is 161 mph.

Only the Hyundai IONIQ 5 Limited trim has a head-up display, and none of the IONIQ 5 trims offer heating for the rear seats. While all trim levels of the EV6 have wireless charging, only the IONIQ 5 SEL and Limited trims include it.
